atkins diet planAtkins diet plan is a form of ketogenic diet.  Atkins diet focus on the consumption of nutrient-dense, unprocessed foods and restricts consumption of refined carbohydrates, such as high-sugar foods, breads, pasta, cereal and starchy vegetables. 

Atkins Diet Plan : How It Works?  

  • Atkins diet plan work by restricting carbohydrate intake.  This would lower the body's stored carbohydrate (glycogen), thus resulting ketosis.  During ketosis phase, the body would burn up fat and resulted in weight loss.  This biologically zero-carbohydrate that triggers ketosis is also known as ketogenic diet.

  • Carbohydrate when taken in excessive stimulates the overproduction of insulin which convert glucose into fat and prevent the breakdown of fat in the body.  Atkins diet plan near zero carbohydrate content is geared towards diminishing excessive insulin response that cause overweight.

  • The food you eat is less processed and more nutritious.  They contain protein and complex carbohydrates that resulted in less craving.

 

Different Phases of Atkins Diet Plan

Atkins diet plan can generally be divided in to 4 phases. 

Atkins Diet Phase 1

Phase 1 of atkins diet plan is call the induction phase, which last for 14 days and place restriction on particular foods for the body to trigger ketoses.  During this 14 days your consumption of carbohydrates is restricted to below 20 grams a day.  During this phase of atkins diet your body is taught to burn fate instead of carbohydrates.  Weight loss during this phase of is usually very drastic.

Atkins Diet Phase 2

In phase two (Ongoing Weight Loss) you add carbohydrate, in the form of nutrient-dense and fibre-rich foods, by increasing to 25 grams daily the first week, 30 grams daily the next week and so on until your weight loss stops. Then subtract 5 grams of carbohydrate from your daily intake so that you continue sustained, moderate weight loss. 

Atkins Diet Phase 3

Phase three's (Pre-Maintenance) objective is to make the transition from weight loss to weight maintenance by increasing the daily carbohydrate intake in 10-gram increments each week so long as very gradual weight loss is maintained. 

Atkins Diet Phase 4

The final phase of atkins diet plan is the "Maintenance Diet".  This phase of is designed to maintain your target weight. Dieters following atkins diet are encouraged to stick with the fourth phase of atkins diet for life, to remain healthy and avoid gaining weight.
